About Me

Hi there! I'm Peter van Grieken, a 29 years old Front End Webdesigner from the city of Gouda in The Netherlands.

I've been making websites for almost 15 years and doing it professionally for over 5 years now. Along the road I taught myself some pretty decent HTML and CSS and I developed an interest in Interface Design.

2009 had a surprising ending for me, but apart from that, it was a good year. I'm really looking forward to 2010 to make that one even better. I've got some exciting things coming up.

One of the positive things about 2009 was all that great music and the concerts and festivals I visited. That's why I like to share my favorite music of last year with you.

Let me know what you think of it.

10 - Simian Mobile Disco - Audacity of Huge

What's not to love about this song. It perfectly reflects the theme of Simian's album "Temporary Pleasures".

9 - Vinnie, Donnie & Sjakie - Pon di Floor

These guys are crazy! I discovered them when I visited their EP release party (liveset here). I had never heard of the guys, but their energy was amazing. There's no video for this track, so here's the audio only-version of this acapella remix of Major Lazor's Pon di Floor.

It's so bad, it's amazing!

8 - Nneka - Heartbeat

It was Caspa's Radio 1 Essential Mix that introduced me to this track by Nneka, a Germany based Nigerian singer.

Can't say much about, I just love it. Especially this dubstep remix.

7 - Great Lake Swimmers - She comes to me in dreams

I saw Great Lake Swimmers in may of this year when I actually came to see Shearwater and I started listening to their music from that moment. I wish Great Lake Swimmers' singer Tony Dekker could sing for me every day.

6 - Monsters of Folk - Dear God

The same goes for Jim James, one of the "Monsters" of Folk. This "supergroup" released their first album this year and although not all reviews were great, I love this particular song, because not only Jim James sounds so great in it, other monsters Conor Oberst and M Ward also sound like Jim James in a way.

There's no official video yet, but there is video contest going on right now, so I just post one of the fan-made video's.

5 - Beirut - The Shrew

Beirut's latest album hasn't created quite the stir the previous albums did, and this song isn't really that different from songs on the other albums, but it sounds so great live. I've had the pleasure of seeing these guys twice this year and both performances were great.

4 - Roosbeef - Onder Invloed

Either you love this girl, or you can't stand her. I'm in the first group so I had this song and the rest of the album on repeat this year.

3 - Muse - United States of Eurasia

My favorite band released their new album in september. And that album was based on my favorite book (1984 by George Orwell), so that probably would have been enough for me to put one of the songs on my list. But this song is more than great as a song, as story and as a show. I even forgive them that Queen-ish riff.

2 - Kyteman - Sorry

Kyteman released his album The Hermit Sessions this year, which was ok, in my opinion. But after hearing great stories about the live shows, I saw him and his hiphop orchestra on Lowlands and saw what the fuss was all about. It was magical and this song was probably the must beautiful song I ever heard live.

To me, this song is song is about making your dreams come true and about determination. When this song was played on Lowlands, I noticed the chill bumps on my arms. Beautiful

1 - Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks

This album has been on high rotation on my iPod since it was released. This song has hit potential without being superficial. Can't say much more about it, the subject of the song has become a bit more relevant to me in the past few weeks, so that's why I put it at the number one spot.

Thoughts

What's your opinion on this list? Which great song did I forget? And what's your favorite song of the year?
